Manuscript receipt, 8 x 4.75 in. "San Fran[cisco]." August 27, 1857. Receipt to Mr. Hardy & Chas Curry for 3 New Model Colt pistols (at 20.00 each), 3 Colt 5 inch pistols (at 17.00 each), 6 patent leather holsters (at 3.00 each) and 3 Holsters for New Model (at 4.50 each), for a total of $166.12-1/2. Paid for Chas. Curry by H. Smith Less than a decade after the Gold Rush, migrants and prospectors were still flocking to California in hopes of a better life, preferably wealthier, but some just wanted to get away from the eastern areas that were becoming more crowded every year. Messrs. Hardy and Curry may not have gotten wealthy, but they seem to have been making a decent living supplying the emigrants. In this type of event such as gold rushes, it seems to be those who supply the participants, whether it be tools, tents, clothing, food (and liquor) who come out ahead in the long run.
