Title: Printed and handwritten business receipt from San Francisco’s First Black Printer and Artist Author: [Grafton Tyler Brown] Place: San Francisco, CA Publisher: Lithographed by G.T. Brown & Co. for J. & P.N. Hanna, Cotton Importers, 308-310 Davis Street, SF Date: October 12, 1876 Description: Printed and handwritten business receipt. 4½x8½". Receipt to W.S.Trowbridge for Bolts of Cotton purchased with “U.S. Gold Coin.” The first prominent African-American printer in San Francisco – and the first Black artist of California and western scenes – Grafton Tyler Brown was born in Pennsylvania before the Civil War to freed slaves. In his early 20s, he moved to Gold Rush San Francisco, working as lithographic artist for a printing company before opening his own business in 1867, designing and printing stock certificates, maps and other documents for companies like Wells Fargo Mining, Levi, Strauss, and Ghirardelli Chocolate, as well as personally drawing fine topographical illustrations for the 1878 Illustrated History of San Mateo County. At some point in the 1870s, Brown sold his printing business to become a full-time artist, painting western landscapes at his art studios in British Columbia, Portland and Tacoma; he finally settled as an Army Engineer in Minnesota, where he died in 1918.
