SAMBIN, Hughues (1520-1601). Oeuvre de la Diversite des Terms, dont on use en Architecture, reduict en ordre . Lyon: Jean Durant, 1572. 2 o (318 x 194 mm). 39 (of 40) leaves (lacking final blank). Title within architectural woodcut border, 36 paired full-page woodcuts of columns and capitals, woodcut head-pieces. Late 17th-century mottled calf, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, a repeated gilt panel in the rest. Provenance : acquired from Bruce McKittrick, 1982. FIRST EDITION, with the presumed first issue of the title with the misspelling of the author's name as "Huges," but reading "l'Architecture" correctly on D4v (noted in some copies as l"Agriculture, sometimes with pasted correction slip). The leaves are signed and gathered in fours, but the volume is conceived so that each pair of woodcuts forms a separate unit of two leaves. "Sambin, architect and sculptor at Dijon, is known primarily as a master of high relief sculpture, and this collection displays the full range of his fantastic inventiveness" (Mortimer French 481).
