BORCHT, Peeter van der (1545-1608). Monkeys ('Le Jeu des Singes') (New Hollstein 182-188, 190-192) ten etchings, circa 1562, from the set of 18, very fine, early and uniform proof impressions of these extremely rare prints, all first state or before Hollstein's first state, before letters and plate numbers, watermark Small Coat of Arms with Crown and Letter R (similar to Briquet 8983), with wide margins, binding holes along the left sheet edge, in very good condition, all hinged to modern mounts, in a modern blue cloth-covered box. Plates: 9 x 11 in. (226 x 284 mm.) (and similar) Sheets: 10¾ x 13 3/8 in. (272 x 338 mm.) (and similar) Provenance : Acquired from Clark Stillman, 1977. According to Hans and Ursula Mielke (New Hollstein) no complete set of this series is known, and of several of the present plates no other impressions before letters and numbers could be traced.
