PINGO, LEWIS. 1743-1830. Bronze Medallion featuring bust of Cook with "Oceani Investigator Acerrimus (The Most Intrepid Investigator of the Seas)" and on the reverse the figure of Fortune holding a Naval rudder atop a globe. London: Royal Society, 1784. Cook was elected to the Royal Society upon returning from his 2nd voyage. The Society issued this tribute medal in 1784 in gold (19), silver (291) and bronzed copper (574), of which this is an example. The specimen in gold given to his widow is now in the British Museum. Pingo was the chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1779 to 1815, following in the footsteps of his father, Thomas Pingo.
