Pingo, Lewis. Bronze Medallion featuring bust of Cook with "Oceani investigator acerrimus [the Most Intrepid Investigator of the Seas]" and on the reverse the figure of Fortune holding a naval rudder atop a globe. London: Royal Society, 1784. One of 574 struck. Cook was elected to the Royal Society upon returning from his second voyage. The Society issued this tribute medal in 1784 in gold (19), silver (291) and bronzed copper (574). The specimen in gold given to his widow is now in the British Museum. See illustration.
