RÖSEL VON ROSENHOF, August Johann (1705-1759)
De natuurlyke historie der insecten. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Bohn and H. De Wit (Or H. Gartman), [1765-1782]
'One of the most beautiful German works on insects of the period' (Landwehr). This Dutch edition is a translation of Der monatlich herausgegebenen Insecten Belustigung, and considered to be preferable to the German edition due to its larger size on thicker paper and superior colouring. Nissen dates the book to 1764-1768 and it appears in many records thus. Landwehr, since the privilege leaf in volume 1 is dated 27 June 1765 and the portrait dated 1782, dates the work to 1765-1782. The supplement, not present here, was published sometime after 1787. Landwehr, Dutch Books with Coloured Plates 161; Nissen ZBI 3467.
4 volumes bound in 8, quarto (278 x 215mm). Half-titles, engraved portrait of the author, 3 hand-coloured engraved frontispieces [including plate 72 in volume 3 part 2], and 288 leaves of fine hand-coloured engraved plates (occasional minor spotting or dust-staining). Contemporary half calf, speckled paper boards, spines in compartments with raised bands, uncut (expert repairs and restoration to bindings, some corners and edges bumped, extremities rubbed).
