ROBERTS, DAVID. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia... London: F.G. Moon, 1846-1849. Uncolored lithographic portrait of Roberts by C. Baugniet on india paper mounted on card, 4 pp. list of subscribers, engraved map, 3 lithographic titles with hand-colored vignettes, and 120 lithographed plates by Louis Haghe after David Roberts the plates mounted on card, all finely colored and finished by hand, on linen guards throughout. 3 vols., large broadsheets 610 x 460 mm. (24.1/8 x 18.1/8 in.). Contemporary maroon half morocco, spines gilt, leather color faded, binding wear; upper joint of vol. I cracked, minor foxing to a few plates, some plain paper guards loose, with chipping to edges. FIRST EDITION OF THE SUBSCRIBERS COPY OF ROBERTS' MONUMENTAL WORK ON SYRIA, IDUMEA AND ARABIA, part of Roberts' Holy Land, but published separately. It was originally published in 20 parts between January 1842 and the end of 1845. "One of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and... the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey p. 341). Abbey Travel 385; Tooley 401. (3)
