ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912) Scott's Last Expedition ... Vol. I being the journals of Captain R. F. Scott, vol. II being the reports of the journeys & the scientific work undertaken by Dr. E. A. Wilson and the surviving members of the expedition , edited by Leonard Huxley. London: Smith, Elder, 1913. 2 volumes, 4 (23.5 x 16cm). Plates, including 18 coloured, most after photographs by Herbert Ponting or drawings by Edward Wilson maps and charts, many folding or double-page. (Light spotting.) Original blue cloth gilt, t.e.g., others uncut (rubbed at head and foot of spines, stitching in vol. II a little weak). Provenance : Gertrude L. Elles, Nov. 1913, first ownership signature in both volumes. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THREE MEMBERS OF THE EXPEDITION, RAYMOND E. PRIESTLEY FRANK DEBENHAM, AND GRIFFITH TAYLOR on front free endpaper. The poem, 'The Barrier Silence,' by Edward Wilson on p. xvi of volume II has alterations in ink in the hand of Gertrude Elles, in which two lines are replaced, and two other words altered. At the foot of the page is a note by her stating: 'The alterations in the lines were made by Dr. Wilson in the original in the possession of Griffith Taylor by whom they were given to me. Nov. 1913.'
