Scott was known as 'Con' by his family, from his middle name 'Falcon', taken from his godparents' surname. Scott's mother Hannah (née Cuming) came from a naval family: the explorer continued to live with her until his marriage. The letter was written en route between London, where the Discovery had been loaded, and the Solent, from which the expedition was to take its formal departure on 6 August.
