RICHARD ANTONY SALISBURY (n Markham, 1761-1829) Icones stirpium rariorum descriptionibus illustratae . London: William Bulmer 1791. 5 original watercolours, on paper, by Salisbury. (Without the final 5 watercolours and corresponding text, scorch marks to title and 2 preliminaries, title repaired along inner margin.) [ Bound with :] MARGARET MEEN (d. 1824). [ Exotic Plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew . London: 1790.] 2 parts, published without a general title. Engraved dedication, 8 etched and aquatint plates after the author, some printed in one colour, all carefully hand-coloured, some plate captions in manuscript. (One plate torn along plate mark, another with short tear at outer blank margin, occasional light stains.) [ and :] SIR JAMES EDWARD SMITH (1759-1828) [ Icones pictae plantarum rariorum, descriptionibus et obervationibus illustratae ... Coloured figures of rare plants with descriptions and observations . London: J. Davis, 1790-93.] 3 parts in one, issued without title pages. 18 hand-coloured engraved plates by and after James Sowerby one with fold-over flap. (Some light soiling and ink stains to plates.) 3 works in one volume, 2 (530 x 384mm). Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards (tears to marbled paper on upper cover, spine and corners rubbed, spine label damaged, inner hinges split). Provenance : Louise Carleson; Edith Bielke, 7 Oct. 1900 (signatures on front pastedown). A RARE COLLECTION OF THE FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL 3 WORKS. Richard Anthony Salisbury, botanist and botanical artist, had a garden at Chapel Allerton, Yorkshire, and later owned Peter Collinson's garden at Mill Hill; he was secretary of the Horticultural Society London from 1805-1816. Of the three copies of his rare Icones Stirpium examined by Stafleu and Cowan, 2 are also incomplete. Margaret Meen exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1775 to 1805, but though she was an assiduous flower painter and taught the art, the Exotic Plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew is her only publication and one of great rarity. It is well complimented by the Icones pictae plantarum or Coloured figures of rare plants of J. E. Smith. This was issued with the title on the wrappers only. Some copies were issued with both Latin and English text, others, including this one, with the text only in English. Stafleu & Cowan V, 10.118 (1st work) & 12.222 (3rd work); BLNH IV, p. 225; III, p. 1278 & IV, p. 1946; Henrey III, 1298; 1089 (calling for a title to each part, presumably printed on the wrappers) & 1345; Nissen BBI 1719; 1332 (alone in calling for a 3rd part and 19 plates); & 1859.
