Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards (tears to marbled paper on upper cover, spine and corners rubbed, spine label damaged, inner hinges split). Provenance : Louise Carleson; Edith Bielke, 7 Oct. 1900 (signatures on front pastedown). A RARE COLLECTION OF THE FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL 3 WORKS. Richard Anthony Salisbury, botanist and botanical artist, had a garden at Chapel Allerton, Yorkshire, and later owned Peter Collinson's garden at Mill Hill; he was secretary of the Horticultural Society London from 1805-1816. Of the three copies of his rare Icones Stirpium examined by Stafleu and Cowan, 2 are also incomplete. Margaret Meen exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1775 to 1805, but though she was an assiduous flower painter and taught the art, the Exotic Plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew is her only publication and one of great rarity. It is well complimented by the Icones pictae plantarum or Coloured figures of rare plants of J. E. Smith. This was issued with the title on the wrappers only. Some copies were issued with both Latin and English text, others, including this one, with the text only in English.
