REVOLUTIONARY WAR, PENNSYLVANIA]. Manuscript petition signed by 31 individuals, addressed to the "Honorable Executive Council of the State of Pennsylvania," n.d. [docketed 8 June 1780]. 3 pages, folio (13¼ x 8¼ in.), minor fold separations. "KILLED CAPTIVATED OR WOUNDED": THE SETTLERS OF NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY APPEAL FOR PROTECTION FROM INDIAN ATTACKS. Beginning in 1776, the British Army had forged strong alliances with various frontier tribes, including the Iroquois confederacy. With British and Tory support and encouragement, they mounted devastating attacks on the western frontiers of the revolted colonies, most notably at Cherry Valley and the Wyoming Valley. But the westernmost settlements in Pennsylvania also suffered, and the desperation of the beleaguered settlers is palpable in this petition: "The Incursions of the Savages have been prosecuted with such unrelenting Fury, and the Force appointed to our support so small...that, early as the Year is, our settlements are wasted, and our Frontier drove in, to within ten or twelve miles of the Towns..." Every day, they complain, "lessens our numbers, many being killed, captivated or wounded." The regiment assigned to various guard stations "are too few to leave the Garrison to which they belong, on any alarm," while "our Fellow Citizens...have been almost constantly under arms," while their farms are seriously neglected. If Northumberland is lost to the British and Indians, Berks, Lancaster and Cumberland Counties "must be involved in the Calamity," and the region "would be a new Niagara to the Enemy...." They humbly petition the Legislature to pity "our misery and deplorable calamity" and furnish troops sufficient enough to "repel any sudden attack" and "drive these ravagers from our borders...." Provenance : Frank T. Siebert (sale, Sotheby's, 21 May 1999, lot 197, $4.000).
