"SUFFERING FOR WANT OF SUPPLY" Flush with his success as the victor of Saratoga, and newly installed as president of the Board of War, Gates writes with noticeable swagger about the gathering of supplies during the dreadful Valley Forge winter: "Congress have thought proper to put the Provision Business on the East Side the Susquahanna entirely in the Hands of the Executive Council of this State but have left the Collection of February, &c on the West Side to the Directions of this Board. You will therefore be pleased to attend & receive Money & further Instructions if the Board should think any further Directions necessary on the Subject." He asks that a supplier be found for carpenters now employed "to build Boats to transport Provisions, Troops &c over Susquehannah" He fears some "may be suffering for Want of Supply; & I am to beg you will endeavour to procure them a temporary Supply, but let that not interfere with the greater Concern." -- GATES. Manuscript document signed ("Horatio Gates"), as commander of the Eastern Department, Providence, 31 May 1779. 1 page, oblong (4½ x 7 7/8 in.) chipped along top edge, matted and framed . GATES APPROVES PAYMENTS FOR PROVISIONS in this war-date order, directing that Major Nathaniel Church receive the sum of $1,881 , "agreeable to the within Abstract for Pay of Subsistence from the [28 May - 13 July] 1780. And...this shall be your sufficient Warrant." Gates signs as Major General, in his capacity as commander of the Eastern Department, headquartered in Providence. Together 2 items . (2)
