"Tobias' signs are liberally displayed on the front of this five-story building, 'Manufactory of the Celebrated S. Tobias, Wine Bitters.' Barrels and boxes litter the sidewalk. Tobias had been a manufacturer of bitters as early as 1831. He first occupied 68 North Third in 1845. In 1847 he changed the name of his enterprise to Solomon Tobias & Son" (Wainwright). Ink notations on this print identify it as dated "Dec. 1845" and supply the North Third Street address. Wainwright 325.
