PSALTER, WITH CANTICLES, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Southern England, probably London, circa 1450] 272x180mm, 124 leaves, including final 2 blank leaves, gatherings of 8 leaves, last 4, with catchwords, (lacking leaves at the beginning, 6 leaves in the first quire, single leaves following ff 11, 33 and 2 leaves after f.119; 2 leaves misbound after f.1 and f.3). 22 lines, justification 185x116mm, written in black ink in an upright gothic textura, versal initials throughout in gold and blue with red and purple penwork flourishing, line-fillers in gold and blue, 153 3-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIALS in burnished gold on divided red and blue ground with foliate decoration and white tracery, 4 three-line initials in red and blue on gold ground infilled with floral decoration and extensions, 5 VERY LARGE INITIALS (6- to 7-line) in red or blue on burnished gold ground, decorated with white tracery, infilled with coloured flowers and with full cusped baguette bar borders, in gold and blue with floral decoration, (Slight marginal staining in first 4 leaves, minute wormholes in last text leaf, but generally in very good condition). 19th-century brown calf (upper cover almost detached) TEXT The manuscript contains the Psalter, followed by Canticles (f.107v) and the Creed (f.118). Unfortunately the Psalms before 21:27 are lacking and the Litany? seems to have been cut out (after f.119) DECORATION This must have been a very luxurious psalter belonging to a wealthy patron. The illumination is typical of mid-fifteenth-century London workshops. The very splendid five large initials are on f.22v (Ps.51), f.23 (Ps.52), f.48v (Ps.80), f.62v (Ps.97) and f.78 (Ps.109), the last is filled with a red and blue rose
