GLOSSED PSALTER WITH CANTICLES, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [France, 12th century] 134 x 90mm. 109ff: 1 8, 2 8, 3 8, 4 7(of 8, lacking v), 5 8, 6 8, 7 8, 8 7(of 8, lacking iv), 9 8, 10 8, 11 1 0(v & vi a part bifolium contemporarily inserted), 12 9(of 10, lacking ii), 13 1 2(of 16, lacking iii, v, x, & xi: iii and xv part folios), the Psalter of up to 23 lines written in a small caroline minuscule in brown ink on a scored ruling, the surrounding gloss of up to 60 lines in a very small minuscule in a pale ink on an indepenent ruling, incipits in rustic capitals, one- and two-line initials in red supplied for the first 8 folios, large opening skeletal initial 'B' with staves of brown and red with swirling, lobed flourishing of the same colours (trimmed margins sometimes affecting top line of gloss, wear and occasional small tears to folio edges). French 18th-century calf gilt with triple fillet border, spine in six compartments gilt with thistle and foliate tools, red-lettering piece (small loss to spine at head, headband split. This is an exceptionally compact glossed Psalter with the Psalms written continuously and consistently on a ruling in the inner part of each page with an interlinear gloss and a marginal gloss written, as necessary, in the upper, outer and lower margins.
