Printed Amulet for Protection of the Mother of a Newborn Girl – Germany, 18th Century

Beschreibung:

Amulet for protection of the mother of a newborn girl, and of the newborn. [Zultzbach?, Germany, 18th century]. Woodcut; print on paper. Printed amulet depicting an encounter between Elijah and Lilith. A woman kindling Shabbat lights in a hanging lamp ("Judenstern") is depicted at the top. At the right and left margins are the figures of Adam (right) and Eve (left), each standing on a balcony with a canopy. Under the title "LeNekeva" ("For a Female") is a German text in Hebrew letters (Tsena Urena letters). At the bottom are the words "Candle-lighting, separating bread, ritual purity", in Hebrew (the three commandments given specifically to the Jewish woman). Length: 15-15.5 cm. Width: 19.5 cm. Fair condition. Creases and wear. Cut margins. Stains. Small holes in upper part. Two pieces of paper and adhesive tape on the reverse.
