.30-06 caliber. 24" barrel length. SN: 168. Pre-WWI Model 1903 originally manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal sometime in 1904 according to Springfield Research Service's Serial Numbers of U.S. Martial Arms. Case hardened receiver with dark oil-quenched finish and rear cutaways for clip insert. Blued metal finish to bolt, barrel band, bayonet lug forend, barrel, and stock fixtures. Type-S walnut stock has a plain straight grip and forearm with single hand grooves to both sides. Stock also has humpback handguard with rear sight cutaway and single stock screw. Receiver also shows cutaways at rear of receiver for stripper clip inserts. Item features adjustable folding notch rear sight with dished windage and elevation knobs, and 2,850 yard top notch. Also featured is dovetail pinned blade front sight, checkered trapdoor buttplate without cleaning kit, triple sling swivels, and a plain trigger. Markings include 5-line "U.S./ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/MODEL 1903/168" to receiver, and "R.I.A/{flaming bomb}/10-13" to top of barrel just behind front sight indicating this item was arsenal refinished. Barrel band is marked "U" to right side, and bayonet lug is marked "H" to bottom. Stock markings include circle "P" proof stamped to wrist with overlapping "5/15" marks, "I/OU/J" to receiver cut-off cutaway, and "B" to left side of wrist. There appears to be an inspector's cartouche to left side of wrist that is very faint and almost non-existent, indicating that the stock may have been refinished at some point. Condition: Very good. Bore is bright with some faint residue toward muzzle and sharp rifling. Finish is good overall, with light losses to finish around front sight and receiver area. There are two dings and a loss to finish through serial number. Wood stock is in good condition showing only a few minor dings and light scratches overall. Buttplate has some residue to checkering and is without cleaning kit. Action is functional. Although the metal bluing does not appear to have been refurbished since the 1913 Rock Island Arsenal refinish, there are some irregularities between the serif of the 1913 "13" year date marks when compared to the October "10" month date marks. These include a slightly larger appearance of the number "13" and a swooped top serif versus a straight top serif in the month markings on top of barrel. Also the "1" and "8" marks of the "168" serial number appear to be just slightly deeper/bolder than the "6". The "1" mark of the serial number has a similar swooped serif style as the "13" year date on barrel.
