.56-56 Spencer caliber. 30" round barrel. SN: 23962. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend secured by three solid, spring-retained barrel bands. Top of receiver marked in three lines: SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO BOSTON MASS / PAT'D MARCH 6 1860. Stock with a vertically stamped script HHH (Henry H Hamilton) cartouche on the reverse wrist followed by a horizontal script DAP (Dwight A Perkins). Retains correct 1860 pattern ladder rear sight, musket style front sight/bayonet lug, both sling swivels and the correct pattern magazine follower tube in the butt. Many of the Spencer rifles with serial numbers clustered close to this one were issued to the 105th Pennsylvania Infantry. An attractive example of a US Civil War martially marked Spencer rifle that shows real world use, but no abuse and has escaped any post-war modifications or alterations. Condition: Very good. Metal with a richly oxidized brown patina showing scattered minor surface roughness and some pinpricking here and there. Markings mostly clear and legible, front cartouche somewhat weak. Mechanically functional, bore about good with moderate amounts of scattered pitting and clearly visible rifling. Stock with moderate wear, showing a small grain crack in the reverse butt and an area on the obverse where initials or other markings were intentionally defaced. Forend with moderate wear as well. Both pieces of wood with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
