Title printed in red and black, within woodcut border by Urs Graf [Hollstein German XI, 288], coloured by an early hand. 139 woodcut illustrations, of which 7 are full-page-width, including 2 repeats, by Hans Leonard Schäufelein [Hollstein German XLIV, 1051-1055], 60 column-width, including 9 repeats, 56 by Schäufelein [Hollstein German XLIV, 1056-1090 and 1092-1102] and 4 by Urs Graf [cf. Hollstein German XLIV, p.18], and 72 small cuts, by Urs Graf and others, woodcut white-on-black initials, some criblé , illustrations and initials all COLOURED BY AN EARLY HAND. (Variable light spotting or browning, some light colour offsetting and scattered colour marking, clean tears affecting text on k1, t4 and O2.) Contemporary ?South German blindstamped calf over wooden boards, central panels of each cover differently tooled, panel on upper cover with flower tools in trellised compartments, lower panel divided diagonally by triple fillets with pierced heart tool, borders with flower and elongated foliate tool, (tools not in Kyriss or Schunke Schwenke-Sammlung ), title tooled in blind on upper cover, red edges (board edges a little rubbed and chipped, skilful repairs, rebacked, lacking clasps, cornerpieces and central bosses). Provenance : C.W. Dyson Perrins (bookplate, sale Sotheby's, 17 March 1947, lot 681, mis-dated 1516, £50 to Maggs). THE DYSON PERRINS COPY OF A NEW EDITION OF THE PLENARIUM , COLOURED BY AN EARLY HAND. The 1514 Petri edition has significant additions, printing a virtually complete Missal for Sundays and feast days. 'The Plenarium [...] consists of the German translation of the Epistles and Gospels together with a Gloss for the understanding of the layman without Latin, as explained in the Preface to the book. The present edition is a new compilation and may be the first in German, though the Low Saxon version with which it agrees [ Dat Boek des hylligen Ewangelii Profecien uñ Epistelen ouer dat ghantze yaer myt der Glosen unde Exempelen (Lübeck: 1506)] appeared much earlier' (Davies).
