First edition in English of the first book on book collecting, the prime work of Richard de Bury (1287-1345), also known as Richard Aungerville (or Aungervyle), an English writer, bibliophile, Benedictine monk and bishop. A patron of learning, he was one of the first English collectors of books, and is chiefly remembered for his Philobiblon, written to inculcate in the clergy the pursuit of learning and the love of books. The "Philobiblon" is considered the oldest and most beloved bibliophilic work. The original Latin text by Richard de Bury (1287-1345), the Bishop of Durham, was translated by John Bellingham Inglis. W. J. Courtenay in the DNB writes: "Philobiblon contains more than expressions of [Bury's] love of books, his methods of acquiring his library and his plans for endowing a college at Oxford that would house his collection. It contains abundant criticisms of contemporary scholarly and religious practices . . . [and] admonishes various groups for their neglect or misuse of learning."
