(Philipp, born Philipp Schwartzerdt, German reformer, theologian, collaborator with Martin Luther, 1497-1560) Autograph Letter signed to Philip, Landgrave of Hesse, 3pp., in German, folio, [?Wittenberg], 1st September 1559, on behalf of Abraham von Guntherod, mentioning Albrecht, duke of Bavaria and sending a copy of of his work, Responsiones ad articulos Bavaricae inquisitionis, torn along central fold, a few other small tears, folds, browned. *** "Responsiones ad articulos Bavaricae" was directed primarily against an ecclesiastical visitation by Albrecht V, Duke of Bavaria. The treatise criticized the Roman Catholic doctrines of salvation by good works and penances. "Responsiones" reiterates Melanchthon's teaching on faith, essentially in the form set down in the Augsburg Confession (1530).
