.45 caliber, 34.5" octagonal barrel stamped on top barrel J.S. Johnston. Brass patchbox and German silver serpent motif inlay on opposite side of curly maple buttstock. Double hammer with pair of engraved lockplates and engraved tang. Brass buttplate and trigger guard. John S. Johnston worked in Huntington County, PA. He made guns of all types from squirrel guns to heavy match guns and his guns were known for their excellent shooting qualities. Please see Cooper, 1977: 37-39. Condition: Light oxidation forming on barrel. Nice light spotted patina on barrel. Brass hardware including patchbox has nice mellow untouched patina. Thimbles have been replaced. Buttstock has a coat of varnish applied for protection. Chip in right side of buttstock from detached rivet. One of the two ramrods is missing its gold cap.
