Paul Henry RHA RUA (1876-1958) The Fairy Thorn 1936 Oil on canvas, 61 x 91.5 cm, (24 x 36'') Signed Provenance: Artist's studio and by descent to Mabel Young Oriel Gallery, Dublin in the 1960s and thence to the present owner. Exhibited: New Paintings by Paul Henry Combridge's Gallery, Dublin, from 13 November 1936 (12). Paintings and Charcoals: Paul Henry RHA, Waddington Galleries, Dublin, 21 February- 3 March 1952 (12). Paintings and Drawings by Paul Henry The Studio, Sidmonton Square, Bray, until 8 November 1956 (4). Paul Henry Retrospective Exhibition, Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, and Belfast Museum & Art Gallery, Belfast, May-July 1957 (4). Paul Henry Paintings and Drawings, Shannon Free Airport, Limerick, August 1957 (4). A fine composition illustrating the Whistlerian influence that characterizes much of Paul Henry's oeuvre. Reviewing the artist's 1936 exhibition at the Combridge Gallery, the Irish Times (16 November 1936), almost certainly referring to this picture, admired 'the wind-swept tree and the mountains full-toned in the middle distance'. The composition is similar to three other Henry pictures, namely ''Wind in the West'', also known as ''Inisfail'', 1917-18; ''The Fairy Thorn'', 1925-9 (reproduced in Padraic Colum, Cross Roads in Ireland, New York, 1930, facing p. 202); and A Western Landscape with a Tree, 1925-9. The present picture is numbered 957 in S. B. Kennedy's catalogue of Paul Henry's Illustrations, Drawings and Paintings (New Haven & London: Yale University Press, 2007). S.B.
