PAPWORTH, John Buonarotti (1775-1847). Hints on Ornamental Gardening , London: R. Ackerman, 1823. 8° (257 x 171mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 28 aquatint plates, the first with transformation overlay, the other 27 hand-coloured (spotted, some offsetting from plates). Contemporary half calf, spine gilt (joints cracked, corners rubbed). FIRST EDITION. This work originated as a series of 34 articles, each consisting of a plate and its accompanying description, which were printed in Ackerman's Repository between 1819 and 1821. Papworth chose 28 of these plates to be included here and added a revised text with a new introductory essay. The plates in this copy are watermarked 1823 but other copies dated 1821 are known. 'A necessary companion volume to the author's Rural Residences and of greater rarity': Abbey Life , 46; Archer 248.2; RIBA 2427.
