PAPWORTH, John Buonarotti (1775-1847). Hints on Ornamental Gardening: Consisting of a Series of Designs for Garden Buildings . London: R. Ackermann, 1823. 8° (255 x 175mm). 28 aquatint plates, all hand-coloured but for one finished in sepia and with an overslip. (Lacking half-title, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary calf gilt (rebacked, old spine preserved, extremities lightly rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance : Henry Sotheran (bookseller's ticket). FIRST EDITION of a work which originated as a series of 34 articles, each consisting of a plate and its accompanying description, printed in Ackerman's Repository between 1819 and 1821. Papworth chose 28 of these plates to be included here and added a revised text with a new introductory essay. In the present copy the plates are not numbered with roman numerals and are indistinctly watermarked 182?. 'A necessary companion volume to the author's Rural Residences and of greater rarity'. Abbey Life 46; Berlin Kat. 3436; RIBA 2427.
