Beschreibung:

A Great War 'Retreat from Mons' casualty pair to 2nd Lieutenant J.C.B. Crozier, Royal Munster Fusiliers, killed in action at Etreux on 27 August 1914 1914 Star and Clasp (2.Lieut: J.C.B. Crozier. R. Muns: Fus.), British War Medal (2 Lieut: J.C.B. Crozier.), extremely fine and presented in a fitted display case stamped Wilson & Sharp Goldsmiths, 139 Princes Street, Edinburgh (Quantity: 2) 2nd Lieutenant James Cyril Baptist Crozier was born in Bowden Cheshire 1890, he was educated at Loretto School and Edinburgh University studying medicine. He joined the OTC Artillery in 1911-1912 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Muster Fusiliers in July 1914. Crozier was killed in action on 27 August 1914 during the retreat from Mons near Etreux. An eyewitness account by Captain H.S. Jervis was sent to the family, the letter records 'B Coy, extended at once, and an attack on the enemy's position commended. Your nephew was on the left or east of the attacking company, and was very much to the fore; a part of A Coy extended the line eastwards, continued by my men (D Coy). The enemy was holding a railway cutting in front of us, so D Coy, tried to rush this, the remainder of the men in that part of the field helping with rifle fire. Owing to lack of cover all my men in this part of the field save two were shot down before the hedge was reached and the attempt failed. Crozier pushed on ahead of his men, clambered out of a hollow lane which he had just reached, and recklessly exposing himself in the open, shouted out "there they are: come on men at the same time pointing to the enemy. As he ceased speaking he fell, killed instantaneously by a bullet through the body. It was noticed that he never moved once he fell. It is therefore, a sad consolation to know that his death was painless and he died with words on his lips which any brother officers would have been proud to be there last also'. The Roll of Honour, Volume I, De Ruvigny, page 102 refers. Crozier is commemorated in the Etreux British Cemetery.
