Voyage d'Egypte et de Nubie. Paris: Pierre Didot l'aine, 1795-1798. 3 volumes. 4to (289 x 209 mm). [lvi], 176; [5], 6-256; [5], 6-392 pp; half-titles; 168 engraved plates and maps (6 folding, including portrait of Christian VI). Modern half calf, with circular paper repairs to each title page, and clean text and plates. Second edition of "the earliest attempt at an elaborate description of Egypt, and its plates are the most significant previous to those by Denon" (cf. Blackmer 1211, 1755 edition). Danish Naval Captain and explorer Frederic-Louis Norden voyaged to Egypt in 1737-1738 at the behest of Christian VI, recording his travels in his diaries with extensive drawings and notes, including the earliest known representation of the Sphinx without its nose. These notes were then assembled by the Danish Royal Society and published first in 1755 in two folio volumes, and published in quarto with additional commentary assembled by Louis-Mathieu Langlès.
