First 4-line initial in gold with red and blue penwork, 5-line initial opening De morali lepra intertwined red and blue, 2-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red and blue (the blue very occasionally faded or offset), early MS. foliation. (Very light dampstain in upper gutter of central quires, very small wormholes in final quires affecting a few letters.) 18th-century French red morocco, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Provenance : early marginal notes at beginning of second text; the Marquess of Donegal (18th-century engraved bookplate); Bute, engraved bookplate. This is the first book printed by Ulrich Gering alone, after his partnership with Martin Crantz and Michael Friburger, which had introduced printing to France, was dissolved.
