Binding : contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards (some wear, several wormholes, headcap renewed, small losses to spine): the outer frame with a stamp of a reindeer at the corners and repeated impressions of a Maria hilf banderole along the sides, the center panel of each cover divided into an ogival saltire pattern with the intersections marked by small rosettes, the compartments filled with a large floral ornament or a small leafy ornament, an Augsburg binding (Kyriss shop 80: Fächer frei); one clasp (strap renewed); without the ten center- and cornerpiece bosses. Provenance : scattered early annotations -- Thierhaupten (diocese of Augsburg), Benedictines: 17th-century inscription on 1/2r; large woodcut bookplate of Abbot Benedikt Gangenrieder, dated 1587 -- "Inc dpl 7300" pencilled on pastedown -- sale, Sotheby's New York, 25 November 1997, lot 132. Fourth or fifth edition of a text first printed in Esslingen ca. 1476-1478. The type in which this book was printed was assigned by Proctor to Johann Otmar, Reutlingen's second printer, but BMC reassigns this edition and the group to which it belongs to Greyff (cf. BMC II, p. xvii). The presence of the initial blank in this copy makes it clear that the first two quires are regular gatherings in eight; hence, the collation given above differs from the incorrect collation found in BMC and Polain. HC 11798*; BMC II, 577 (IB. 10664); BSB-Ink. N-174; Pr 2695; Goff N-219.
