NEW YORK WAR OF 1812]. MACDONOUGH, Thomas (1783-1825). A small archive relating to his actions in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Plattsburg on Lake Champlain. Macdonough commanded the small U.S. Champlain fleet at the outset of the war, and on 11 September 1814, he drove the British from the lake after a brilliant action. His victory forced a British retreat to Canada and prevented their claiming the lake or territory in New York at the peace negotiations.
