This interesting lot contains a Liberty double eagle dated 1861. The reverse has been planed and engraved as follows: THIS MONEY WAS THE FIRST EVER MADE BY HENRY KETELTAS AS A PRIVATE IN THE 71st REG'T N.Y.S.N.G. AND GIVEN HIS MOTHER JULY, 1861. Henry Keteltas was born in New York City in 1838. He was a descendant of Jan Evartson Keteltas, who came from Holland in 1649 to settle in New-Amsterdam. Keteltas graduated from Columbia College, and after traveling in Europe, returned to America to serve in the Civil War. As a member of Company F, 71st Regiment, New York State Militia, he enlisted as a Private and subsequently fought at the Battle of Bull Run. He was soon promoted to the rank of Captain in the 15th United States Infantry and served in the campaign of the Army of the Ohio. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, but returned to duty in three months. He was present at all the engagements of the Army of the Cumberland until April 18, 1864 when he was assigned to the staff of Major General James B. Fry in the War Department, Washington. After having been in command of Fort Morgan, Mobile Bay, and Mount Vernon Arsenal, Alabama, he resigned from the army June 17, 1867 having been brevetted as a Major "for gallant and meritorious service" at the Battle of Shiloh, and as a Lieutenant Colonel "for gallant and meritorious service" at the Battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Colonel Keteltas was a member of Military Order Loyal Legion, George Washington Post, G.A.R.; St. Nicholas Society, Holland Society, and the Union Club of New York. He died May 25, 1896 in New York City. This coin is exceptionally well preserved with only the lightest rubbing on the highpoints. Certainly an interesting piece of Civil War Americana. Colonel Keteltas, as an esteemed New Yorker and American, had a prominent obituary in the New York Times of May 25, 1896. (PCGS 8932)
