The Freedom Now Suite was an explicitly political work composed by jazz drummer Max Roach and singer Oscar Brown, with five movements spanning slavery, emancipation, the civil rights movement, and African independence movements. They began composition early in 1960, intending it to be performed in 1963 for the centennial of Emancipation, but a recording was released in 1960 under the title "We Insist!," and this debut performance at the Village Gate was held soon after to benefit the Congress ...
