MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1489-1552). Cosmographie universalis lib. VI. Basel: Sebastian Heinrich Petri, March 1559. 2 o (314 x 205 mm). Roman and italic types, Presbyter John's account in Hebrew on penultimate leaf. Title within historiated woodcut border, woodcut portrait of Münster on verso; 14 double-page woodcut maps, including 2 world maps, the first by David Kandel, showing the New World, and one map of the Americas; 41 double-page town views, including 3 "panorama" views with full fold-out sheet, one double-page illustration of marine monsters, approximately 970 woodcut text illustrations, from a variety of sources, including approximately 75 views and plans, of which about 10 full-page. (A few leaves with short marginal tears, occational some minor staining.) Contemporary blindstamped German pigskin over wooden boards, two brass clasps and catches. Provenance : Paul Haffner (ownership inscription dated 1627 on front paste-down) -- Francis Richard (ownership inscription on title). Fourth edition to contain the fine double-page city views, which first appeared in the 1550 edition. This edition contains an updated version of the section on the New World (pp. 1099-1113), including references to the voyages of Vespucci, Magellan, and others.
