(8), (3), 4-320; (5), 322-701, (35) pp. Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignette, 26 folding engraved plates (all, 2 somewhat yellowed, minor foxing). Contemporary brown polished mottled calf, slightly worn, gilt edges of covers, richly gilt spines in six compartments, red edges. Minor foxing. Signature of U. Celsing on first endpaper. 2 volumes. Mariotte, Edme (1620-1684), French physicist and priest. His De la nature de l'air (1676) includes a statement of Boyle's law on gas, which he discovered independently and which is sometimes called Mariotte's law in France. One of the founders of experimental physics, Mariotte investigated a wide range of phenomena, including the motion of bodies, sound, hydrodynamics, barometry, color, and vision.
