Woodcut vignettes on titles. 48 mounted color-printed plates. 20th-century blue crushed levant morocco by Birdsall, covers with elaborate morocco onlay scenes in tan, brown, green, aqua, red, purple, salmon, and gray, within double gilt filet border, spines in 3 compartments with 2 raised bands, gilt-lettered in 2, top edge gilt, others uncut; cloth chemises and slipcases. Provenance : M.C. Gaines (bookplate on endpaper). LIMITED EDITION, number 426 of 500 copies printed on Riccardi paper. The scenes onlaid to the bindings skillfully recreate illustrations from the text, including: The dolorous stroke, issued by Sir Balin's hand to the Fisher King (Book II, Chapter 15); Sir Tristram's battle over La Beale Isoud's beauty against Sir Breunor at Weeping Castle (Book VIII, Chapter 25); Alisander le Orphelin's introduction to Alice la Beale Pilgrim (Book X, Chapter 39); and Percivale, Galahad, and Sir Bors' battle with many knights to protect Percivale's sister from a strange custom (Book XVII, Chapter 10). The text is based on William Caxton's translation of Malory's work. (4)
