MAGNUS, Albertus, binder, attributed.] Corpus Iuris Civilis . Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu for Louis and Daniel Elzevier and for F. Hack (Leiden), 1663-64.
MAGNUS, Albertus, binder, attributed.] Corpus Iuris Civilis . Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu for Louis and Daniel Elzevier and for F. Hack (Leiden), 1663-64. 8 o (193 x 110 mm). Engraved title (minor marginal worming at end). Contemporary Amsterdam binding, probably by Albert Magnus: gold-tooled scarlet morocco, roll borders and fillets surrounding a densely decorated field of solid and pointillé small tools, wide spine tooled in compartments, gilt edges, green ties, original endpapers; red morocco pull-off case by Riviere and Son. Provenance : Lord Powers, Library at Bennetti (ownership inscription dated Dec. 1908); Mortimer L. Schiff (bookplate); purchased from Ida W. Schuman, 2 January 1957. A beautiful Dutch binding, probably done by Albert Magnus of Amsterdam, who did a lot of work for Blaeu. The pair of curls and the large floral sprig appear to be identical with tools, as reproduced by M.M. Foot, The Henry Davis Gift ch. 17, p. 247. Williams 1323.
