MAGNUS, Albertus, binder, attributed.] Corpus Iuris Civilis . Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu for Louis and Daniel Elzevier and for F. Hack (Leiden), 1663-64. 8 o (193 x 110 mm). Engraved title (minor marginal worming at end). Contemporary Amsterdam binding, probably by Albert Magnus: gold-tooled scarlet morocco, roll borders and fillets surrounding a densely decorated field of solid and pointillé small tools, wide spine tooled in compartments, gilt edges, green ties, original endpapers; red morocco pull-off case by Riviere and Son. Provenance : Lord Powers, Library at Bennetti (ownership inscription dated Dec. 1908); Mortimer L. Schiff (bookplate); purchased from Ida W. Schuman, 2 January 1957. A beautiful Dutch binding, probably done by Albert Magnus of Amsterdam, who did a lot of work for Blaeu.
