LYCOSTHENES, Conrad (1518-61). Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon. Quae praeter naturae ordinem, motum, et operationem, et in superioribus & his inferioribus mundi regionibus ... acciderunt . Basle: Henricus Petri, 1557 2° (278 x 192mm). Large woodcut on title and about 1600 woodcut illustrations including some repeats, woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf. (Last leaf laid down preserving printer's device, waterstaining in last 3 quires; clean tear in Gg3 and inner margins of two leaves repaired, without any loss of text). 18th-century mottled calf (head and foot of spine defective). Provenance : G.G.Lancaster, 19th-century bookplate. FIRST EDITION of an anthology of monsters, prodigies and portents, copiously illustrated, including a comet resembling a spaceship sighted in Arabia in 1479 (on p.494), and sightings of Halley's comet.
