Large woodcut on title and about 1600 woodcut illustrations including one double-page (here on guard) and repeats, several by H.R. Manuel Deutsch and David Kandel, woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf. (Light browning, occasional spotting or small staining.) 18th-century calf gilt (wear at spine and corners, light stains). FIRST EDITION of an exhaustive anthology of monsters, prodigies and portents, copiously illustrated, including a comet resembling a spaceship sighted in Arabia in 1479 (on p.494), and sightings of Halley's comet.
