LINCOLN, Abraham. Engraved document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Washington, D.C., 13 May 1864. 1 page, folio, ON PARCHMENT, elaborately engraved, blue paper seal of the United States at left, bold heading at top "The President of the United States," beneath which is an American Eagle and the "E Pluribus Unum" motto, at bottom a large vignette of crossed flags, cannon and other military paraphernalia, accomplished in manuscript, in very fine, fresh condition. THE APPOINTMENT OF FESSENDEN TO BRIGADIER GENERAL. Francis Fessenden (1839-1906) was appointed Captain of the 19th United States Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War. After suffering a severe wound at Shiloh, Fessenden was promoted to Colonel with command of the 25th and subsequently the 30th Maine. He received a second wound while leading an assault during the Red River Campaign, costing him his leg. His gallantry in battle prompted Stanton to recommend this promotion to Brigadier General, an honor he received at the age of 25.
