DS, 15.5 x 19.5 in. December 26, 1901. Commission appointing Clarence A. Stott as "Second Lieutenant of Cavalry." Also signed by Elihu Root as Secretary of War. Tilford, James D. (1877-1952). Partially-printed DS as Lieutenant of 1st Cavalry Regiment. 2pp, 9 x 11 in. July 1, 1901. Document honorably discharges Clarence A. Stott, a corporal of the 1st Cavalry Regiment, by reason of "telegraphic instructions Regimental Commander 1st Cavalry dated July 1, 1901, to accept commission in U.S. Army." Document signed thrice by Tilford, with inscription on printed line under "Character" heading reading, "Excellent" in his hand. Accompanying this lot are 4 watercolor portraits of members of the Stott family housed in églouisé frames. Each approx. 9.875 x 13.75 in. (sight), framed to 15.625 x 19.75 in. Subjects identified by ink inscriptions on adhesive labels to frame versos: "David Stott / B. 3-28[?]-1822 / D. 6-16-1859 / My Grandfather," "William Armstrong / B. / D. 12-28-1868 / My Grandfather," "William Wells / Stott / [indecipherable] -16-1841 / [indecipherable] -14-1891 / My Father," and "Clara Armstrong / Stott / B. 2-22-1849 / D. 12-17-1929 / My Mother." Little is known of the life of Clarence Armstrong Stott (1876-1907) apart from his notable marriage to the daughter of Colonel William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Irma Cody, in 1903. He was a lieutenant in the 12th U.S. Cavalry, and was for a time early on in their marriage stationed in China and the Philippines. After returning to the United States, Clarence died of pneumonia in White Horse, South Dakota in 1907. Lieutenant Stott's sister, Mary Latta, married Colonel Perry L. Miles (the subject of Lot 220).
