Thomas, M.D. ALS, 3pp, 7.5 x 12.25 in., "Cadiz, Ohio." July 12, 1842. Addressed to wife, "Eliza," at Brandywine Manor PO, Pennsylvania. Stampless letter postmarked "Cadiz Ohio Jul 12." Thomas gives an excellent account of his travels. He had left by horse car to go to Coatsville to view a military parade. He writes about the encampment and seeing soldiers, noting that they were "marching down to the meeting house for afternoon worship." He boarded the passenger car from Philadelphia, and went to Columbia, and from there he started on to Marietta by foot. He continues with commentary on his Ohio travels into Pennsylvania, some via steamboat from Pittsburgh to Wellsville, a "distance about 50 miles - cost 1.50/100 including dinner." Thomas encounters several people during his journey, including a miller from Carlisle, Ohio, who all complain of "hard times" and economic strife. Thomas indicates that his travel concerns a "business" venture of sorts, though he does not fully explain his objective. Condition: Some closed tears and toning in the letter. Cadiz, Ohio postmark is very fine.
