LEONARDUS DE UTINO (d.1470). Sermones de sanctis . Speier: Peter Drach, 9 February 1478. Chancery 2° (295x215mm). Collation: π 8 2π 6 1 10 2-41 8 42 6 (π1r table of subjects, 2π6 blank, 1/1 blank, 1/2r prologue, 1/3r text, 42/5 colophon, device (Weil 95), 42/5v table of sermon titles, 42/6v blank). 348 (of 350, without blanks 2π6 and 1/1) leaves, the two preliminary quires are here bound at the end. 42 lines and headline, double column. Type: 1:130G (headings and colophon), 2:94G (text). 14-line initials in intertwined red and blue, 3- to 6-line initials alternating in red and blue, contemporary ms. quiring in red visible in most upper margins. (Dampstains, part of upper margin of 1/1 cut away and replaced affecting 3 letters, small blank section of margins reinforced in last 2 lvs. of table, small wormholes affecting a few letters in first and final few quires, light soiling on first and final leaves.) Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, blindstamped, one brass boss (of 5) retained on each cover, 2 brass fore-edge clasps, narrow section of inner front boards hollowed out (as a hiding place?), remains of woodcut as front pastedown, (binding darkened, rubbed, and repaired). Provenance : marginal annotations in several hands. This edition is unique in having a sophisticated system of reference, showing Drach's concern for increasing the utility of his editions (see also lot ). Here quire numbers are printed at the top of each page, and within each quire columns are lettered alphabetically. In the table each subject is then given a precise reference, which enables the reader to locate passages quickly and easily. Although this system obviously could also serve its traditional purpose as a means of ordering the sheets for binding, this copy contains manuscript quiring as well. H *16135; BMC II, 489 (IB. 8468); Goff L-160; Polain(B) 2482; IGI 5742; BSB L-115
