Leaf from a Bible, with opening of Hosea and prologues, and a historiated initial, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment [northern France (Paris), third quarter of thirteenth century] Single leaf, double column of 55 lines in tiny university script, capitals touched in red, rubrics and simple initials in red, marginalia set in red penwork boxes, two decorated initials in blue and burgundy containing interweaving foliage, and with trailing foliate sprays tipped with gold fruit, these supporting a small blue bird and a large white bird, one historiated initial containing the prophet in green and red robes seated with his formerly promiscuous wife Gomer, with its tail extending into margin above and ending with gold fruit, contemporary replacement of parchment of upper border and corner (barely noticeable), slightly trimmed at edges (with loss to running title), small stains and spots, else fine and crisp condition and on thin parchment of excellent quality, 240 by 157mm., in large card mount From the same manuscript as the previous lot.
