(Leaf Book) - Ens. 2 ouvr. - An original leaf from the Polycronicon printed by William Caxton at Westminster in the year 1482 […]. San Francisco, printed by the Grabhorn press for the Book club California (printed by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn), 1938. In-4° (n.c.). Contemporary binding : bradel half beige cloth, brown paper boards with Caxton's device, flat spine with leather label. Original leaf rubricated tipped-in and accompanied with notes on Caxton, the whole work and fifteenth century England by Benjamin P. Kurtz, Oscar Lewis and Edwin Grabhorn. Issued to 297 copies. The Polychronicon was written in Latin by the Benedictine monk Ranulf Higden, first translated in English in 1387 and first published by Caxton in 1482 (only an Epitome was published in 1480). Caxton was probably the first Englishman to introduce a printing press into England in 1476, and the first English retailer of printed books. Provenance : J. C. Slagle (ex libris). JOINT : [CARTON, Charles-Louis].- Colard Mansion et les imprimeurs brugeois du XVe siècle. Bruges, Vandecasteele-Werbrouck, 1848, in-8° modern bradel blue cloth, wrappers preserved (some foxing, tear in the title-page).
