Contemporary binding : bradel half beige cloth, brown paper boards with Caxton's device, flat spine with leather label. Original leaf rubricated tipped-in and accompanied with notes on Caxton, the whole work and fifteenth century England by Benjamin P. Kurtz, Oscar Lewis and Edwin Grabhorn. Issued to 297 copies. The Polychronicon was written in Latin by the Benedictine monk Ranulf Higden, first translated in English in 1387 and first published by Caxton in 1482 (only an Epitome was published in 1480). Caxton was probably the first Englishman to introduce a printing press into England in 1476, and the first English retailer of printed books. Provenance : J. C. Slagle (ex libris).
