VINTAGE 1985 ***** One of my favourite burgundy vintages. Certainly some of my most consistently glowing notes. The weather conditions were interesting: unprecedented low temperatures in January, snow in February delaying budding but minimising the risk of late frosts. Delayed flowering; June and July were fairly normal but, from the first week in August, heat and drought, then hail storms; 25 of the crop in Aloxe-Corton was destroyed, but surviving vines produced excellent wines. From 1 September constant sunshine. A ripe, healthy crop and one of the best vintages in most growers' memories. They demonstrate [as a collective whole] the superiority and extra depth of the grands crus, the quality of the 1er crus as well as, even in a vintage like this one, the variations between village wines. MB, Vintage Wine La Tâche--Vintage 1985 Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti All lots in original wooden cases, all banded prior to inspection Lot 160 levels: six 1.5cm, three 2cm, three 3cm, consecutive serial numbers 011658-11669, Wilson Daniels slip labels; Lot 161 levels: eight 1cm or better, four 3cm, consecutive serial numbers, Wilson Daniels slip labels, two capsules cut, Domaine and vintage branded corks, one with signs of seepage; Lot 162 levels: five 1cm or better, two 1.5cm, three 2cm, two 2.5cm, semi-consecutive serial numbers, Wilson Daniels slip labels, one cut capsule, Domaine and vintage branded cork, one depressed cork Parcel: lots 160-162 "First tasted at the Domaine, October 1990: deep, rich, intense yet showing some maturity; extraordinary aroma, back to its brilliant self after the preceding dreary vintages, spreading and fluttering its wings like a bird after rain. The sweetness of ripe grapes and alcohol, assertive, great length, dry finish. Six years later, from an American cellar, showing well. Also in New York, at a BYOB dinner in 1997 -- what deliciously extravagant wines our American friends bring to these informal events. The wine was lovely. The following year at Wagner's vertical: now medium pale, attractive; a light fragrant Pinot aroma, then opened up beautifully and within 30 minutes fully evolved. Believe it or not, after four hours in the glass (I only left a little!), lovely, still exuding charm, and an hour after that reminding me of a shop dispensing aromatherapy oils. On the palate sweet, nice weight, lovely flavour, perfect balance. One of the best of Wagner's 60 vintages. Most recently: beautiful in all respects. At its most gloriously fragrant best.
