La Mortraye A., "Voyages en Europe,en Asie, et en Afrique ou on trouve une grande variete de recherches geographiques sur lItalie, la Grece, la Turquie, la Tartarie Crimee, la Circassie, la Suede…", La Haye, 1727. First edition in French. Folio 32x23cm, two volumes, contemporary full leather rubbed, some leather on spines missing, light scattered browning and spotting, engraved frontis in each volume, titles in red and black, Volume 1:[7], 472p., [23], 28 copper engraved copper plates (16 splendid, double page or folded) and two folded maps, as called for, covering his travels in Greece and the Levant, Volume 2: [3], 496p., [39], 17 engraved plates (6 double pages) and two folded maps, few plates detached in second volume which covers Black sea area and northern countries. Overall a good plus set. La Mortraye travelled around Europe, Asia and Africa from 1696 to 1729. In Scandinavia became confident to Charles XII. His escape to the Levant, after Poltava battle defeat, led Mortraye to travel extensively to the Levant, visiting Greece, Thrace, Constantinople and several places around the Black sea. He continued later in Anatolia and the Archipelago. He spent several years in the Ottoman Levant. His extensive travel account is one of the best of 18th century. The work contains fine, mostly folio double page, copper engravings, with fine views of the Levant, after original drawings. It is richly illustrated. Atabey 661,Blackmer 946. Rare.
