Joseph Farquharson RA (Scottish, 1846-1935) Some Gleams of Sunshine signed lower left oil on canvas 29.5 x 44.5cm. Provenance: With the Fine Art Society, bearing inscribed label to reverse, and another partial label describing the present picture as a version of the larger composition, 'Some gleams of Sunshine amid renewing storms', exhibited at the RA in 1923. Recorded at Sotheby's London, 30 August 1974 (lot number and price unknown) Latterly, a Devon Private Collection Though Farquharson travelled widely, spending time in London and North Africa, he always returned to painting the landscapes of his native Scotland, and particularly his beloved family estate of Finzean, Aberdeenshire, which he later inherited, earning him the nickname the 'Painting Laird'. At Finzean he painted many of the snow scenes for which he became so renowned, even constructing a mobile studio 'hut', which allowed him to paint en plein air even in the most adverse weather conditions. The present scene, with its dynamically rendered light to the central background, is an example of Farquharson's acute eye for the constant shifts and changes in his surroundings. A closely related scene, with a similarly huddled shepherd and flock, is in the Tate Collection. A composition with a comparable shepherd and hound group was sold at Sotheby's New York 19/10/2015, lot 191A
