Beschreibung:

JODE, Cornelis de (1568 - 1600). Americae pars borealis, Florida, Baccalaoa, Canada, Corterealis with Quivirae Regnum, cum aliis versus Boream . Antwerp: 1593. Two engraved maps forming a complete map of North America from Anian to Greenland, sheet sizes, 370 x 500mm and 350 x 235mm, Latin text on verso. The first map America pars borealis extending from Greenland to lower California, the map surmounted by a title set in a strapwork cartouche with dedication to Theodor Echter at upper left and inset vignette of Frobishers' ship attacking natives on the shore at upper right, inset vignette of six natives of Virginia after John White the sheet on Quivira extends from lower California to Anian, with 3 inset descriptions set in decorative cartouches, the seas decorated with 3 ships, a sea horse and a sea monster, titled above upper graticule. These two rare maps from the second edition of de Jode's Speculum Orbis Terrarum form an especially pleasing map of North America, strongly engraved and carefully constructed. Both maps are based on Petrus Plancius's exceptional wall map of the world published in Antwerp in 1592 (Shirley 183 one known copy), and perpetuate various inaccuracies notably that the mid Atlantic coast is pushed northwards by four degrees. Curiously Burden notes only one state of the de Jode America pars borealis , but in fact this copy and Burden 81 both have a correction in a descriptive text in northern Canada with the ammendment of the name Ribaldo, whereas Swartz and Ehrenberg The Mapping of America p.78 show the map in its earlier state. Burden Mapping of North America 81;82.
