IRELAND - ZALTIERI, BOLOGNINO (fl. 1560s).
IRELAND - ZALTIERI, BOLOGNINO (fl. 1560s). HIBERNIA Insula non longe Brita[n]nia in Oceano sita est. Venice: Bolognino Zaltieri 1565. Engraved map of Ireland. 330 x 244mm (Some discolouration to upper left of map.) A very rare first state of Zaltieri's map of Ireland, as distinguished by the absence of Zaltieri's imprint, which appears on the second state. Woodward attributes the fine engraving to Paolo Forlani. The depiction shows the island adorned with details of the landscape, including major towns and forests. The image is further enhanced by the presence of the scrolled and foliate title cartouche, located in the upper left corner. The shape of the island is geographically quite progressive in relation to its contemporaries. This issue was quickly followed by a second state. Tooley:1939 no.317, Woodward:1990 no.58 (noting only the second state), Woodward:1996 watermark 128.
